Attacking Worship
The suggestion that methods of worship is one of the most controversial issues in the church today seems ludicrous at first. Usually the disagreements are over music style, but preaching / exhortation styles, liturgy, and other areas garner much attention as well. Why? Is this something new to our generation? Not really. Organs drew many complaints when first brought into the church, and many of what are now considered sacred hymns were frowned upon when first introduced. So history repeats itself in a big way, and Satan is delighted.
Satan was made by God to be the ultimate worship “machine”. He most desires our worship and loathes when we give it to God. It is our biggest weapon against him, and yet he has effectively used it to turn us against each other. Perhaps it is the next best thing, if he can’t get our devoted worship, is to cause us to spend our time bickering about our worship of God rather than actually worshiping.
Satan has been quite successful in many places at either distracting us with the debate or keeping us stale by refusing to change with the culture in order to avoid the debate. Neither is any better than the other. No, we shouldn’t be surprised that worship style is the most debated topic in the church today, but it’s time for us to grow up and give Satan a surprise.
