The Irony of Our Punishment
While out for a brisk walk the other day, the thought occurred to me that I do not enjoy brisk walking in ninety degree heat, nor do I enjoy working out in a cold room (or any other room for that matter). Why do we do it? To get in shape and stay healthy.
I began to think about that first sin, you know, eating fruit which should be healthy but definitely wasn’t in that particular incident. I surmised that if Adam and Eve had not sinned, we would not have to work so hard to stay in shape. Our bodies would be perfect because everything would be perfect. The irony is in verse 19 of Genesis chapter 3, “
In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return.” So in other words, our punishment is working hard to put food on the table, then we have to work just as hard to lose the weight we have gained from eating too much of what we sweated to get in the first place.
