Run For Your Life
A few weeks ago, in an effort to try to drop a few extra pounds that seem to creep on to me the older I get, I decided to start running more. For several years now I have done run/walk intervals through my neighborhood once or twice a week alternating with various muscle toning workouts on other days. My change in routine would involve the run/walk intervals week days and Yoga on Saturday.
I have come to expect to wake up each morning with an insatiable need to stretch every part of my body – yes, old age and a little osteoarthritis. By the end of the first week of running and no sit-ups or other routines I noticed I wasn’t waking up stiff. Hmm, I thought, could the increased running have made that difference, or just not doing the other work-outs, or was it because my husband was out of town all week and I had the bed to myself. Luckily it didn’t turn out to be the latter.
I did a little research on the benefits of running, and turns out it not only burns calories and strengthens the heart, but strengthens joints and ligaments. I’m a few weeks into this change now and so far so good.
