The Bad Ole Days
Thanks to Netflix, I recently began watching the TV series Mad Men. It’s a little odd in that I don’t think I’ve ever gotten into a series before where I didn’t like any of the characters. Occasionally I find myself a little sympathetic for or cheering on one of the female characters, but for the most part they are all pretty pathetic.
What I do find very intriguing about the show is the nostalgia. The ad campaigns they work on and general activities take me back to a time I was too young to remember otherwise. The authenticity in most cases is spot on. Oddly again though, most of the memories are not good ones.
One of my first thoughts was, I hope these actors have good health insurance if all that smoking on the set is real. Sexual harassment was part of the office norm, leaving litter on the ground after a picnic was the norm, and I could go on. You can’t call those the good ole days. Some things do change for the better.
